An ongoing creative process

The Material Recovery Plant is both a collector of recycling material from the basin, as well as having the capability of involving the community in the process of caring for the Lake. Located in Lake Atitlan, one of the most important bodies of water in the Country of Guatemala, it is characterized by its clear waters, volcanic landscapes, and cultural importance to ancient and modern cultures, being the main source of livelihood of many locals. Paradoxically it is however, imminent to become toxic due to ongoing contamination and lack of clarity in acknowledging the problem, this current imperceptive attitude towards the lake is rooted in the deceiving yet astonishing views of a beautiful site hiding a much more urgent reality. The spaces are articulated with the aim to reposition the relation between the inhabitants and the lake.
This thesis project broadly inquires on the concept of perception in relation to our environment through the experience of Architecture. Specifically encouraging different modes of engagement between the individual and place. The work focuses mainly on three different types of perception studies, these are:
1. Distant perception, through the study of tourism
2. Local Perception, through the myths and stories of the place
3. Self perception, through phenomenology and the senses

Cities evolve in an organic nature throughout time, reacting to specific stresses and sensibilities to create identity and places. That very statement positions architecture as a crucial piece of that process, shaping the physical but also the intangible form of the city and it is the immaterial aspect of the city that carries the true identity beyond any single building.
The architecture of this project is intended to explore that notion of an Architecture of Nothing, where architecture rather than being a singular site piece, claiming to be the newest face of city. It surrounds the site with ambiances of life breading opportunity and growth, an architecture that frames the site so the city can overtake the site with its true immaterial nature, that nature being; its culture, its sounds, its problems, its fears, its colors, its people, etc.

The University of Manitoba Interdisciplinary Research Science Centre (I.R.S.C) is set to be the new gateway for the future expansion of the campus, the design undertakes the role of a welcoming point to access the science alley of the campus. The building is set as a complement to the existing courtyard yet keeping both a visual and physical connection to the river bank.
The main 3 storey atrium is focused in providing multiple visual lines to all the program that is housed in the public floors of the building. The glassed facade allows for constant light and visual connection to the courtyard that has been altered and design to promote its use by providing sitting paving and light during the night.
Both the atrium and the courtyard promote a constant engagement between the outside and inside conditions but more importantly the connection between people among themselves and also among their surroundings.

Transient is described as the impermanence of a thing or of a phase in people’s lives. We felt that this term struck true to the Way-finding: Street Art Project in terms of the art’s impermanence and of the momentary phase of people moving from the front entrance to the back in order to enter Fleet Galleries.
Our goal is to make an emphasis on the momentary process of moving through the alleyway of the Exchange District, one that would normally go unnoticed with the anticipation of entering the building.
